What You Actually Need to Start
- Gloves — The one piece of gear you can't train without. For boxing or Muay Thai, start with 12-16oz training gloves. Most gyms require 16oz for sparring. Brands like Everlast, Sting, and Fairtex have solid entry-level options that won't break the bank.
- Hand Wraps — Non-negotiable. They protect your knuckles and stabilise your wrists. Get 180-inch wraps — the extra length gives you more padding. Elasticised wraps are easier to put on when you're learning.
- Mouth Guard — Required for any sparring. Boil-and-bite mouth guards from Shock Doctor or SISU are affordable and mould to your teeth at home.
- Shin Guards — If you're doing Muay Thai or MMA, you'll need these from day one. Fabric slip-on guards are fine for beginners — you don't need leather competition guards yet.
- Headgear — Not always required for beginners, but strongly recommended once you start sparring. Cheek-protection headgear gives the best balance of visibility and safety.
What You Don't Need Yet (Save Your Money)
Skip the 00 gloves, competition boots, and pro-level gear until you've trained for at least 3-6 months. Your first few months are about showing up and learning technique — not looking the part. Upgrade your gear once you've earned it.
